About Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC)
Pregnancy Resource Centers of Greater Portland (“PRC”) is a 25-year old, privately funded not-for-profit which is the only no-fee provider of pregnancy tests, limited medical services including Ultrasound, and practical resources and education for under-served girls and women in Tri-County Portland. PRC serves 8 thousand women annually through five Centers.
There are roughly 50,000 women concerned about an unplanned pregnancy in Tri-county Metro Portland each year. Each one faces life-altering decisions along with emotional and physical challenges.
Each of these is someone’s daughter, girlfriend, wife, mother, sister or friend. Often, she has little or no personal support, or is afraid to share, so without a listening ear or informed advice, she often faces life-changing decisions without complete and accurate information and without a safe place to sort things out.
Her needs may be many, including pregnancy tests to verify her situation, answers to medical questions, medical services such as ultrasound and obstetrical referrals, and comprehensive information on her three primary options -- parenting, adoption and abortion.
She needs a no-pressure setting to explore her options with another woman. Depending on her situation, she may need referrals to various agencies that can provide critical resources such as shelter, food, clothing, educational access, professional counseling, addiction recovery, and protection and recovery services due to domestic violence and/or sexual abuse.
These needs are addressed by the unique set of services currently being provided, free of charge, for more than 8,000 women each year through PRC’s five Portland Metro area Centers. Clients indicate their very high appreciation for, and satisfaction with, PRC services as 99% of clients say they would refer a friend to PRC if they faced an unplanned pregnancy.
In part, PRC reaches and serves these women through community collaborations, receiving client referrals from hundreds of area health care providers, schools, counseling practices, and churches. PRC likewise refers clients to 70 carefully-screened area agencies and professional service providers that can further meet client needs.
Equal Opportunity--PRC serves all women and their families regardless of race, creed, religion, economic or social status. We provide at no charge: pregnancy tests, complete and accurate information, peer counseling, limited Ultrasound services, and crucial resources, referrals and education for women facing unplanned pregnancies, and to new mothers and their infants before birth and during their first year after giving birth. Our peer counselors are carefully trained and supervised. Our nurses are licensed, fully trained, and operate under the direction of a physician. The information we provide is scientifically accurate and our approach is non-judgmental, open, and compassionate.
Our paid staff of approximately 30 men and women (most part-time) are supported by an army of almost 250 volunteers in centers, and more than 500 volunteering outside of Centers, like SFL walkers! It is no secret that without their gift of time and service, the ministry of PRC in Portland would cease to thrive.
